Walk in my Shoes 2019
June 9, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm
£15Are you up for the challenge? Do you think you could complete a walk with a simulated sight impairment, this year we have selected sight loss related to diabetes! Come and ‘walk in my shoes’ and find out!
We are challenging you to walk from La Frigate to Bel Royal or St Aubin and back while wearing goggles that simulate sight impairment while being guided by a sighted partner. This ‘walk in my shoes’ is in memory of Islander, EYECAN member and friend Glen Robertson who sadly passed away in 2016, Glen lived with sight loss and diabetes but continued to provide support to a number of charities and was training to be a counsellor. Glen felt that people would understand sight loss more if only they could ‘walk in his shoes’ for a day.
On arrival you will receive training from EYECAN’s Rehabilitation Officer who will teach you the basics of guiding a sight impaired person, you will collect your simulation glasses at registration and together with a buddy set off on the challenge. Experience the challenge together, if you wish, by sharing the walk between you.
Group training sessions on how to guide a sight impaired person will last for approx. 10 minutes and will be held at 0900 and 0915.
Our challenge isn’t a race, it is a way of you experiencing the challenges faced by sight impaired members of Jersey’s community.
Not feeling up for the challenge? That’s ok too. How about a walk from La Frigate to St Aubin and back, a good way to blow out the cobwebs on a Sunday morning and a fantastic way of supporting one of Jersey’s oldest charities.
