Walk in my Shoes 2019
June 9, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm£15
Are you up for the challenge? Do you think you could complete a walk with a simulated sight impairment, this year we have selected sight loss related to diabetes! Come and ‘walk in my shoes’ and find out!
We are challenging you to walk from La Frigate to Bel Royal or St Aubin and back while wearing goggles that simulate sight impairment while being guided by a sighted partner. This ‘walk in my shoes’ is in memory of Islander, EYECAN member and friend Glen Robertson who sadly passed away in 2016, Glen lived with sight loss and diabetes but continued to provide support to a number of charities and was training to be a counsellor. Glen felt that people would understand sight loss more if only they could ‘walk in his shoes’ for a day.
On arrival you will receive training from EYECAN’s Rehabilitation Officer who will teach you the basics of guiding a sight impaired person, you will collect your simulation glasses at registration and together with a buddy set off on the challenge. Experience the challenge together, if you wish, by sharing the walk between you.
Group training sessions on how to guide a sight impaired person will last for approx. 10 minutes and will be held at 0900 and 0915.
Our challenge isn’t a race, it is a way of you experiencing the challenges faced by sight impaired members of Jersey’s community.
Not feeling up for the challenge? That’s ok too. How about a walk from La Frigate to St Aubin and back, a good way to blow out the cobwebs on a Sunday morning and a fantastic way of supporting one of Jersey’s oldest charities.
When will I get my T-shirt and water bottle?
T-shirts and water bottles can be collected on the day of the walk at La Frigate registration/meeting point. Please bring your printed ticket with you to ensure you get the correct t-shirt.
What are my parking options for getting to and from the event?
Car parking is available at Les Jardins, The Esplanade, Patriotic Street and the Laybys along Victoria Avenue.
How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
You can contact EYECAN by calling (01534) 864689 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
Can I bring my own buddy for the walk?
Yes, the buddy and walker will both have to be registered on the ‘Challenge walk’, but you can chose your own buddy on the day.
Can I bring my Dog?
For safety reasons, if you are completing the Challenge walk you will not be allowed to bring animals with you. However if you are just completing the walk to St Aubin’s and back dogs and animals are more than welcome.
Can children do the challenge walk?
Children can complete the challenge walk and the walk to St Aubin and back, but please ensure that each child has a responsible adult with them for the entirety walk.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
Please ensure that you bring your printed ticket to the event, this ensures, for safety, that we know who is walking and that we can provide the correct T-shirt to each participant on the day.
Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
No. Each ticket must be registered in the name of the walker. This is to ensure for safety that we know who is walking and who has returned.
Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn’t match the person who attends?
For safety reasons the name on the ticket must be for the person walking.
I am completing the Challenge Walk, do I need to complete the training?
Yes, before heading off on the walk you will be required to complete a short, basic, training session on how to guide a sight impaired person.
Who will conduct the training on how to guide?
The training will be conducted by EYECAN’s Rehabilitation Officer who will ensure that people are confident and comfortable with guiding before they set off.
